What was ‘9 to 5’ about?

9 to 5 starred Dolly Parton as Doralee, Jane Fonda as Judy and Lily Tomlin as Violet—three women working under misogynistic vice president Franklin Hart, Jr. When Violet’s passed up for a promotion and Doralee learns of a rumor about an alleged affair between her and Hart, the duo, joined by Judy, set out for an evening of drinking and smoking marijuana. Dreaming up scenarios in which they’d put an end to Hart, the next day, a series of coincidences occur that lead the women to believe Violet accidentally poisoned his coffee—just as she had fantasized about.

Ultimately, Hart arrives back at work after a hospital visit and a series of hijinks and misunderstandings involving the three women (including kidnapping a body they thought to be his from the hospital’s morgue), and when he threatens to report them for their actions, one thing leads to another before they ultimately kidnap him, keeping him captive in his home. In his absence, the women implement a series of initiatives that greatly improve the company, and while this film tells a hilarious tale of revenge, it also serves as an honest commentary on the female experience in the workplace.

Why ‘9 to 5’ was so important—especially at the time

At the time of the film’s release, the experiences of the women at the heart of the movie were very real—and the improvements they made within their workplace in Hart’s absence reflected the desires of working women all over the country and the world. Equality in terms of pay, childcare and flexibility with hours were just a few of the changes they made within the office, and for stars as big as Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin to illustrate those desires on screen, it truly meant something.

Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ costars remember her legacy

In the wake of her passing, both Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have taken to social media to share their memories of the late singer. In a post shared to X, Tomlin wrote, “Friend. Songwriter. The Great Harmonizer of Humanity. Dolly. Dolly. Dolly. Forever Dolly.” 

In a separate post shared by Jane Fonda, the actress went into great detail about the impact Parton had on her. “I never knew anyone like her. She was simultaneously a naughty, playful southern gal from the hollows of Tennessee and a deep, soulful thinker who could see through people right down to their true selves.” She continued with a funny, oh-so-Dolly anecdote, sharing, “She had a survivor’s instinct and seemed to always know just what to do, just what to say, to make things right…and then she’d stick her butt out the car window and moon Kenny Rogers’ home. She was the voluptuous embodiment of empathy. That’s something of hers she’d want us all to take with us.”

Long before Lacey Chabert became one of Hallmark’s most familiar faces and Warren Christie joined the new Little House on the Prairie, the two starred together in 2014’s The Color of Rain. And while both actors had already appeared in Hallmark projects (Chabert in over 40, Christie in about 10), the film marked the first time they shared the screen.

Based on a true story, The Color of Rain follows two people brought together by unimaginable loss who unexpectedly find love—and a second chance at building a family. More than a decade later, the film remains a memorable entry in both Chabert and Christie’s Hallmark careers.

What is ‘The Color of Rain’ about?

The Color of Rain follows a mother of two, Gina, whose husband recently lost his battle with terminal cancer. Wanting to be close to her children and searching for a way to cope, she begins volunteering at their elementary school where she meets the Spehn kids. 

When Gina discovers that the Spehn’s father, Michael, is in a tragically similar situation, having just lost his own wife to cancer, the two form an unlikely bond while helping each other get through the most difficult time in their lives. What follows is a friendship where Gina and Michael begin to lean on each other and heal, all while beginning to fall in love. 

‘The Color of Rain’ is a true story

While fans frequently turn to the Hallmark channel for a feel good Christmas film or a sweetly predictable romance, The Color of Rain offered something a bit different. The emotional film, which is based on the book of the same name, follows Michael and Gina’s real story of grief,  love and finding a way to cope with loss.

Matt Kell and Cathy Spehn, the previous spouses of Gina and Michael, had grown up as friends while living in Rochester, Michigan. Although they had formed a bond early on, their paths diverged in college and Cathy married Michael Spehn, while Matt tied the knot with Gina. Both couples went their own ways, welcoming children of their own and building successful lives. 

Matt was diagnosed with a rare and incurable cancer, leiomyosarcoma, and unfortunately lost his battle on Christmas day in 2005. The following year, Cathy discovered she had inoperable brain cancer and tragically died just 17 days after finding out. 

Having gone through very similar ordeals, Matt and Cathy’s surviving spouses turned to each other while dealing with their own grief and raising their respective children. But what began as a support system turned into love, which blossomed over the course of a year and a half. 

In 2007, Michael and Gina married each other and became a blended crew of 7. Together, the couple established the New Day Foundation for Families, created to help other families facing cancer. 

Chabert and Christie talk about the movie

It wasn’t until a few years after they tied the knot that Michael and Gina decided to share their story with the world in their 2011 book, The Color of Rain. Not long after that, the memoir was adapted into the emotional, heartwarming Hallmark film.

Both Chabert and Christie spoke about what drew them to the project and why they felt it was an important story to tell. 

“I saw a piece that Gina and Michael had done on the Today show, and I was really moved just by their story and the fact that they were able to find each other after suffering through such loss,” Chabert said. “I was really honored to be a part of it.”

Christie shared his own thoughts on joining the project, explaining, “I didn’t realize that it was a true story until the very last page, and at that moment my stomach dropped a little bit and I went back to figure it out… I just thought it was a really beautiful story about love and loss and healing, and an important one, and one that was going to resonate with a lot of people.”

As for what it was like working together, Chabert only had kind things to say. In an interview, the actress shared of Christie, “He is great! Warren is a million laughs a minute. He is so funny and I just adore him.”

I think it’s a romantic comedy. It’s about two people falling in love, but it also stemming from a place of female friendship, which is really beautiful and lovely.”

Tom Bateman brings Adam to life

The gruff and handsome Adam is being portrayed by Tom Bateman, and the actor urged fans that the book itself was honored as best as possible throughout the entire film. “Every single person involved with this had such a deep love for the book and for doing it justice for everyone that loves it, for the amazing characters in the world,” Bateman shared with People. “The intention was always we wanna make this the best it could be. And who better to tell it to than a group of people who love it so much?”

“People get emotional when they talk to me about Camp Rock, Connie and what she meant,” Canals-Barrera shared exclusively with Woman’s World. “There was a lot of heart in those two incredible franchises [Camp Rock and Wizards of Waverly Place], where people were touched and moved, and that just blows me away.”

Canals-Barrera starred as Connie Torres, the mother of talented singer-songwriter Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) in both Camp Rock (2008) and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010). In the original film, Mitchie desperately wants to attend Camp Rock, where she can begin to pursue her dreams, but the only way she can is if Connie takes her catering business there. Not wanting her new friends and fellow campers to know that she’s helping out in the kitchen, Mitchie keeps her real identity a secret, which becomes complicated when she forms a connection with teen popstar, Shane Gray (Joe Jonas). 

Now, Canals-Barrera is bringing Connie Torres back for Camp Rock 3, where she has taken on the role of Camp Director, helping new campers make the dreams of new attendees come true. Woman’s World had a chance to chat with Maria Canals-Barrera about reprising her role 16 years later, plus what it was like to work with Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers before they were world touring artists. 

Connie is back in a greater role

While Connie began her journey at Camp Rock in the kitchen as the caterer, the character has moved up through the ranks and is now Camp Director, taking her unique ability to connect with talented teenagers to a different level. 

“I love that she’s written as such a beautiful, caring, selfless, supportive mom, not only to her own daughter in the first two movies, but also to all the other campers,” Canals-Barrera shared. “And in this new one, the fact that they promoted Connie to Camp Director is thrilling. I can’t wait to hear the fan feedback.”

Becoming Camp Director was a seamless transition for the character and one that the actress was completely on board with. After supporting Mitchie in the first two films, Connie’s character arc from encouraging mom to a caring Camp Director just made sense. 

“Their personal behavior affects their peers at camp, and it matters to Connie because she loves those kids, and she goes out on a limb for them,” she shared. “It’s not just checking a box and collecting the payment. It’s about helping make their dream come true… something that has always touched me is how supportive and generous she is of all the campers, helping them with their creativity and finding their voices. Supporting the friendships that happen and the music—she’s the real deal. She’s an amazing character, and I love playing her. ”

Bonding with Demi Lovato 

Over the course of Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, Canals-Barrera and Lovato had a lot of time to bond and become the on-screen mother and daughter duo everyone knows and loves.  

“It was so much fun filming the first one and meeting and hanging out with Demi, the cast and Demi’s mom,” Canals-Barrera shared. “It was such a special, sweet time because we had no idea that it was going to be so beloved or that Demi would be a major superstar… the Jonas Brothers were so polite to my little girl. So sweet and friendly and wholesome and kind. Demi as well. It was an incredible, sweet time and then two years later, we did the second one and that was a blast, so it’s been like a dream come true to do another one 15 years later.”

While the actress spent a lot of time with Lovato during filming, there’s one off-screen moment that has stuck with her because it wasn’t just behind-the-scenes—the moment made it into the film. 

“There’s a special thing in the original movie that my character says to her when she’s feeling insecure,” she started. “I say to Demi’s character, ‘You’re really good. I hear you in your room when you’re rehearsing,’ and that actually happened [in real life]. When I was at Demi’s mom’s apartment, she was rehearsing in her bedroom and I could hear her and she sounded incredible. So when I actually did the scene, there was such an emotional recall of it because that really happened, where this young little actress was practicing for her role in a movie, and then art imitates life, and I had that exact line in the movie as her mother… I remember that being a really sweet moment.”

‘Camp Rock 3’ brings back some nostalgic favorites

Creating a third film for a beloved franchise over 15 years later can be a daunting task, especially with such an incredible fan base that is ready to be immersed back into that world. 

“There are plenty of Easter eggs for fans who remember the first two movies to enjoy,” she teased. “The music, of course. The songs are rearranged and brought back, and the new music is phenomenal. The dancing is out of this world, which I always mention because when I was watching this third one, I really was blown away.”

Fans of Camp Rock will certainly adore this new story while also feeling nostalgia for the original films, with several callbacks to key moments. Canals-Barrera is “over the moon” for fans to tune into Camp Rock 3 and meet the new campers. 

“Every character is very distinct and well written,” she shared. “I think all of the audience will really see themselves in at least one of the campers.”

Camp Rock 3 premieres on August 13 at 8 p.m. ET on Disney Channel and the next day on Disney+!

What is ‘The Last Sunrise’ about? Plot, location and trailer highlights

In The Last Sunrise, viewers will get to know Ry. A college student with a chronic illness, Ry isn’t one to seek out adventure, but when she accompanies her mother to Mallorca, Spain, while she closes a real estate deal, she’s immediately taken by a charming local, Julian. As the summer progresses, Ry and Julian embark on a series of adventures, with Ry living as if this summer were her last—but it doesn’t take long for life to get in the way. While Ry’s condition progresses, her mother learns of her relationship with Julian, whose family owns the docks around the island that stand in the way of her mother’s deal. Soon enough, the summer of her dreams becomes far more difficult than she thought it’d be. 

In the newly released trailer for the film, we see Ry embracing what her Spanish summer has to offer. “My life back home just feels like a constant loop,” she states in the trailer. “This summer I wanted to live like it’s the last summer I’ll ever have.”

Who stars in ‘The Last Sunrise’? Get to know Eva Longoria, Maia Reficco and the cast

Taking the lead in this film as Ry is Maia Reficco with Fernando Lindez playing Julian. Playing the role of Ry’s mother, Isolde, is Eva Longoria, 51. Though Maia Reficco isn’t exactly new to the acting world, sharing the screen with a star like Longoria was a real treat, and the 26-year-old actress opened up in conversation with Hollywood Elite about working alongside her. 

“She’s perfect. I love her. She’s incredibly smart and beautiful and sweet and generous with her knowledge, and so inspiring. I look up to her, obviously, for a wide plethora of reasons. It was really special to get to learn from her and to firsthand witness how she commands a room and how she commands a set. I feel like I learned a lot from her.”

Longoria shared a similar sentiment when talking about Reficco, telling Teen Vogue, “She is the coolest chick and has such a bright future ahead of her. I loved watching her be the star that she is, and it was beautiful to be on set with her. The entire cast was so sweet. When you’re on location shooting, especially on an island, you get very close because all you can do is work and hang out.”
