If you’ve been counting the days since that gut-punch of a Marshals Season 1 finale, take a deep breath. Kayce Dutton’s story is far from over, and the answers you’ve been waiting on about who survived that Weaver ranch ambush are finally starting to trickle in. Between a brand-new sneak peek, fresh cast confirmations and some very telling quotes from the actors themselves, there’s a lot to unpack for those of us who’ve been riding with the Duttons since Season 1 of the original Yellowstone.

Here’s everything Season 2 has served up so far, sorted by what matters most.

The Season 2 trailer just dropped—and fans noticed who was missing

On Friday, July 3, CBS released the first sneak peek at Marshals Season 2, and the tone is exactly what you’d expect: tense, threatening and squarely focused on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes).

The promo opens with a mysterious man telling Kayce, “I’ve heard stories about the Duttons.” Kayce, ever the man of few words, fires back: “The fact that you’re doing this tells me you haven’t heard them all.” (Chills, right?)

The trailer also gives us glimpses of Miles (Tatanka Means), Andrea (Ash Santos) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham)—a very welcome sight for anyone still emotionally invested in Rainwater’s ongoing role in the Yellowstone universe.

But eagle-eyed fans immediately noticed two glaring absences: Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) and Belle (Arielle Kebbel). Given how Season 1 ended—with Belle and Cal ambushed on a mission involving Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey)—the omission set off a wave of panic. Were they killed off-screen? Did the trailer just skip them for suspense?

Thankfully, the actors themselves have stepped in to calm the waters.

Cal and Belle are back—and here’s what the actors are saying

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Logan Marshall-Green all but confirmed that Cal survived that finale cliffhanger—though not without consequences.

“I can confirm [Cal] is alive, but not necessarily unscathed,” Marshall-Green, 49, told the outlet. “I think I can confirm that for everybody in the damn show, because everybody’s going through it by the end of this thing. I’m hours away of shooting [Season 2, Episode 1]. I can tell you that we’re all going through things—without giving anything away.”

Arielle Kebbel echoed the news for Belle fans. “I am a part of Season 2, yes,” she confirmed. “We start filming [Season 2] with a pick up of that [finale] moment. My head is so deep into Season 2 already.”

Kebbel, 41, also opened up about her first reaction to reading the finale script, which she says caught her off guard—but not in the way you’d expect.

“After reading that big cliffhanger, I should have asked myself if Belle survives! But the truth is that I’m so used to Belle being in precarious situations almost every episode,” she said. “And even though both Belle and Cal are there, it felt in that moment that, because Cal is in front, he’s the one in more in danger. I’m behind him, based on where we ended the episode. So when I read it, my head went to, ‘What’s going to happen to Cal?'”

In a separate interview earlier this year with TVInsider, Marshall-Green offered a similar tease: “We pick up right where we left off, I mean literally and figuratively. No rest for the wicked.”

Marshall-Green wants Cal around for the long haul

For fans worried about a potential exit, Marshall-Green shut that speculation down hard. He’s not going anywhere—and he wants Cal’s story to go to some seriously heavy places.

“I love employment! I love steady income, and I love more than anything this crew and this cast. I could easily see myself making this show for many years,” he said.

But more than job security, he wants Cal’s arc to matter. “Now—where is the story juiciest, now that we’re dealing with a subject matter like cancer? I don’t wanna sugarcoat it. I don’t want kid gloves on. I don’t want a safe approach. I want Cal to go through it, because I think that is the duty to these men and women who come back from uniform.”

He added: “And maybe there’s a way, with the advancement of treatments, to have both worlds. But really, in the end, it’s about what stories are left to tell. That’s up to [creator] Spencer [Hudnut] and the writers, and also Luke [Grimes]. Luke’s been playing this role for a long time. But I think I can speak for everybody when I say that we love coming to work, and, boy, do we come to work. The first season was a grueling shoot.”

The confirmed Season 2 cast

Here’s where everyone stands heading into the next chapter, based on official confirmations:

  • Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton — Officially back. No surprise there, but Paramount has made it official.
  • Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin — Confirmed and currently filming Season 2.
  • Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner — Confirmed and picking up right where the finale left off.
  • Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz — Confirmed for return after appearing in every Season 1 episode.
  • Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton — Not yet officially confirmed, but his character survived the finale, so fans are optimistic.

Santos teased that her character is heading somewhere new. “Season 2, I think we’ll start to see a side of Andrea that’s almost opposite to how we met her in Season 1,” she told People magazine earlier this year. “That’s what’s been really interesting to me.”

Given that Season 1 ended with Andrea being offered a job that would take her from Montana to Washington D.C., that shift is going to be interesting to watch.

What Kayce’s next chapter looks like

Grimes, 42, has spoken candidly about how his own life—specifically becoming a father to son Rigel Randolph Grimes with wife Bianca Rodrigues Grimes—has changed the way he approaches Kayce.

“The whole run of Yellowstone I was just guessing. I didn’t know what being a father was like. But I think being a father changes the way I not only treat my pretend son, but the way I treat everyone,” Grimes told IndieWire earlier this year. “Now I see everyone as a baby that just got big—I give people a lot more grace and forgiveness knowing they started as someone’s child. That was a whole new perspective I didn’t see coming.”

Kebbel also hinted that Season 2 will lean hard into the Yellowstone DNA fans have loved from day one. “We pick up immediately in Season 2 where we left off, especially with the Weaver ranch and the looming circumstances there. I think people may be surprised to see just how bad it gets,” she said. “I really appreciate that, because it’s a nod to the Yellowstone ongoing battle of land and wealth and power and money, and how far people will go to protect their land.”

Marshals is streaming on Paramount+ now and returns this fall on CBS.
