It’s not every day you find out that you were exchanged with another child at birth, but that’s exactly what happened to Daphne and Bay in the ABC Family drama, Switched at Birth. Bay grew up in a wealthy family, while Daphne was raised by a single mom in a working-class family. But after taking a DNA test for a lab assignment in school, Bay discovered that she might not be living the life she was meant to. Soon, she gets genetic testing done, only to find out she was switched with another child, Daphne, after her birth.

Switched at Birth aired for five seasons from 2011 until 2017 and had a massive audience, raking in over 3 million viewers for its premiere. Get to know the stars of the series and see where you may recognize them from.

Born: November 6, 1986, San Antonio, Texas

Personal life: Previously married to Brian Habecost from 2014-2017

Best known for: The Big Bang Theory (2011-2017), Community (2014) and Christmas a la Mode (2019)

Thoughts on Switched at Birth:I think Daphne starts off as this naive, really sweet girl,” Leclerc said. “…She ages through the series and becomes a woman, and it’s really cool to see that. Ultimately, I think her biggest shift is that she’s more refined. She’s boiled everything down–she’s this really cool, empathetic, awesome gal.”

Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish

Born: October 31, 1992, Los Angeles, California

Best known for: Gilmore Girls (2005-2007), Dexter (2009-2011), The Dead Girls Detective Agency (2018-2019) and Saving Zoë (2019)

Thoughts on Switched at Birth:I actually think the biggest change in Bay from the pilot to now was this aspect of teenage rich, spoiled selfishness she had about her that completely dissolved,” Marano said. “She really was able to grow personally through meeting Daphne… The friendship that they’ve built is an amazing one.”

Constance Marie as Regina Vasquez

Personal life: Previously with Kent Katich and mother to daughter, Luna-Marie

Best known for: Selena (1997), American Family (2002), George Lopez (2002-2007) and Undone (2019-2022)

Thoughts on Switched at Birth:I was raised by a single mother, and I love the role of Regina Vasquez because she’s a single mother who wasn’t a victim and was raising her child in a way that made me proud,” Marie explained. “I love that the roles of the mothers are strong but still have a sense of humor and love their children so much but make many mistakes. They’re very human.”

D.W. Moffett as John Kennish

Thoughts on Switched at Birth:I like the fact that our show is about family, because I have a family,” Moffett shared. “I can relate a lot to what is going on. I love that I get to play an adult in a show that is about teenagers and I’m not two-dimensional. My voice is a real component in the show.”

Lea Thompson as Kathryn Kennish

Born: May 31, 1961, Rochester, Minnesota

Best known for: Back to the Future (1985), Caroline in the City (1995-1999), The Trouble with the Truth (2012) and The Year of Spectacular Men (2017)

Thoughts on Switched at Birth:Kathryn is just coming into her own,” Thompson said of her character. “She’s getting a voice of her own, and I think she was always a little more subservient or something to her husband in terms of his fame and him having all the limelight, and now she’s got a little bit of limelight and it definitely shakes things up.”

Lucas Grabeel as Toby Kennish

Born: November 23, 1984, Springfield, Missouri

Best known for: The High School Musical trilogy (2006-2008), Return to Halloweentown (2006), Sheriff Callie’s Wild West (2014-2017) and Family Guy (2010-2021)

Thoughts on Switched at Birth:It’s been a great experience because on paper Toby was completely different when they had written the character originally than after I had gotten the job,” Grabeel explained. “And so, the whole musical part of his character and playing instruments and singing and writing songs and all of that stuff came after I was hired, which was really great. And so, they have tailored a lot of the character to my own strengths and abilities.”

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe
