Outlander Season 8 has only just begun, but fans can’t help but already look ahead to the future, holding out hope that maybe one day, with the help of some miracle, we’ll see Jamie, Claire and the rest of the Outlander cast on screens once again. Though the showrunners confirmed that the series, which combines elements of fantasy, romance and historical drama, would be concluding with the eighth season, some fans have reason to hope that someday, down the line, Outlander will return in some form or another. This is largely because the author of the series on which the series is based, Diana Gabaldon, hasn’t even completed the final book in the saga yet. Here, we dive into all the possibilities and analyze whether or not an Outlander reboot could ever come to fruition.

Diana Gabaldon’s next book is still in the works

One of the main factors leading some fans to believe that the Outlander series could continue in some form or another is the fact that Diana Gabaldon is still writing the tenth book in her series. In May of 2025, she took to Facebook to share an official update on the book’s status, revealing that the title was A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out. She clarified at the time that the book was not finished and therefore had no publish date, though she did confirm that she knew how the story would end. She also went on to clear the air about what the title might imply.

“NO, that doesn’t mean Jamie’s going to die. It’s not a death blessing, it’s the Blessing of St. Michael, said for a warrior about to go and do something important and possibly dangerous. There are quite a few people in this book who qualify for that blessing, believe me…,” she wrote in the post.

The author gave an even more recent update about the status of the next book back in February, writing on her website, “Sorry, I don’t know when I will finish Book Ten, much less when it will be published. I am limiting travel in 2026 to work on it. (It takes a while to write an 800-page novel and also do all the historical and other background research that is required.)” The author also confirmed that it would be her final Outlander novel, though she plans on writing two additional books as part of the Outlander universe. Knowing that the story on screen will not reflect the final chapter of the story laid out in the books gives us hope that maybe, one day, these characters will be back for more.

Would the original cast return for a potential ‘Outlander’ reboot?

Though a reboot of the original series is merely hypothetical, based on what the cast has said about the show ending, we’d like to believe that there’s a good chance we’d see the original cast return! In a recent interview with People, Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie, shared that he struggled to feel satisfied with the show’s end because of the fact that there will be more to the story written by Gabaldon. “I don’t think you could ever be satisfied,” he shared. “I honestly think you couldn’t, because we haven’t done all the books and we haven’t fully realized the book series.”

While season 8 marks the official end of Outlander as we know it, the love story of Jamie and Claire—and the passionate fan community that adores them—isn’t going anywhere. With more books on the horizon and a cast that clearly isn’t ready to let go, who knows what the future might hold? For now, we’ll savor every moment of this final season and keep hope alive that someday, in some form, we’ll return to the world of Outlander.
