Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe Get Candid About ‘Outlander’ Season 8 and Saying Goodbye
The beloved stars share their heartfelt feelings about the series finale—and it's bittersweet
On March 6, Outlander fans will tune in for the very last season premiere when the eighth installment of the beloved Starz series hits screens. It was in 2014 when the show first debuted, with a bright-eyed Sam Heughan bringing to life the courageous and noble Jamie Fraser, while Caitriona Balfe brought her zest and zeal to Claire.
Though the television series has been bringing fans romance, drama and ultimately, joy, for more than a decade, the Outlander universe was first established in 1991 with the debut of Diana Gabaldon’s first eponymous novel. Though the door is closing on the series, the books remain in progress, with Gabaldon currently writing the next installment titled A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out.
With so much time having passed since we first met these characters, it’s hard to imagine what it will be like saying goodbye for good in a few weeks—and it’s safe to say that the show’s stars are feeling the same way. Heughan revealed he doesn’t believe he could ever truly be pleased with the show’s conclusion. Here, see what Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe had to say about the series coming to an end.
Sam Hueghan and Caitriona Balfe talk ‘Outlander’ Season 8
In a recent conversation with People, Heughan got candid about saying goodbye to Jamie in this final season, telling the publication, “I don’t think you could ever be satisfied.” He continued, “I honestly think you couldn’t, because we haven’t done all the books and we haven’t fully realized the book series.” The actor went on to share that the story being told in this upcoming season will hopefully leave fans feeling satisfied, but shared that when Season 7 concluded, he certainly felt like there was more story that needed to be told.
“I certainly felt I wasn’t ready to walk away,” he shared. “I still had an itch to scratch, and I think the fans would’ve felt that as well, but it’s hard. How do you tie up something like this?”
Similarly, Caitriona Balfe reflected back on her time bringing Claire to life, stating that this upcoming season held a lot of unknown for both her and the rest of the characters being that Diana Gabaldon is still finishing the rest of the Outlander story. As for whether Balfe considers herself satisfied with how the story ends, “It’s hard to say, because going into it, we had no idea what was going to happen. This season was probably the first one that we went in sort of blind—except for season 1, maybe.”

What is ‘Outlander’ Season 8 about?
There’s much on the horizon in the upcoming eighth season of Outlander, but perhaps the greatest threat looming ahead is war headed toward Fraser’s Ridge. Additionally, a prophecy has reached them in the form of Frank Randall’s book, which reveals that Jamie Fraser is destined to die in said war. Now, with so much more at stake, only time will tell what Outlander Season 8 will truly hold.
Though the television series is coming to a close, the Outlander universe continues to grow. With Diana Gabaldon currently writing the next book installment, fans can rest assured that Jamie and Claire’s story will live on in new ways. For fans who’ve invested their hearts in this epic love story, that’s a comforting thought: while this chapter may be ending, the journey isn’t truly over.
