It’s been over a week since the Season 3 finale of Shrinking, and fans are already begging for Season 4. But will it happen? And if so, will all of the cast return? Below, we share everything you need to know about Shrinking Season 4, including details on the plot, release date and more.
What we know so far about ‘Shrinking’ Season 4
To the delight of fans, Shrinking has been renewed for a fourth season by Apple+—an unexpected move given that co-creator Bill Lawrence had previously said the show was designed to run for three. That shift in plans has only added to the intrigue, with Lawrence teasing that Season 4 will take the series in a very different direction. “Excited to start a completely new story next year. Feels scary/risky/fun,” Lawrence wrote in an X post earlier this month.
He then clarified that further in another post, writing, “You guys can read about this if you wish. We always pitched a three season story on #Shrinking grief-forgiveness-moving forward. We wanted to stay true to that and end the way we planned. So excited to do Season 4 and a new story with the same cast.”
Shrinking follows therapist Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) as he tries to repair his relationship with his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) and deal with the passing of his wife. To try and cope, he turns to his own therapist and mentor Dr. Paul Rhoades (Harrison Ford), which is when the chaos truly begins. The themes of friendship and love will most likely continue in Season 4, but in a very different format.
“If the fourth season started and Jason Segel woke up and went, ‘You know, I’ve been thinking about it, and I was still super sad about my wife,’ everybody would be, like, ‘What are you doing? We saw that already,’” Lawrence teased to Deadline in January 2026. “But as a writer, we told 36 stories with these actors and actresses. We have a new story to tell, and that’ll either be a two- or three-season story or it won’t. I never find that stuff daunting.”
Lawrence also teased that there would potentially be a time jump in Season 4, which would heavily impact the plot and the characters’ storylines. “I think people will feel when they come back to this show, that it’s a completely different story,” Lawrence told Variety of the cast’s return earlier this year. “And the reason we agreed to do it was that we feel that the cast and characters of this show have enough stuff going on in their life that we are interested in seeing what a new story for them looks like.”
“There’s some stuff in the third year that is left unresolved, and it hints that the next year will be different because of what characters are doing and where they’re going,” he continued. “People shouldn’t be surprised if there’s a time jump and it feels like we’re telling a completely different story.”
Who will be a part of the ‘Shrinking’ Season 4 cast
Despite the potential new stories, the Shrinking Season 4 cast will most likely remain the same. That means that, yes, Ford will be coming back, which many viewers were worried wasn’t going to happen after the Season 3 finale. Another cast member that could return? Michael J. Fox! In a recent interview with People magazine, the actor said, “I love Bill [Lawrence] and I’m so happy it’s a success. And it’s such a great time being with those actors.”
“It’s so important to me to have that to go to. And I would absolutely do that in a heartbeat,” Fox continued.
