It’s almost time for Season 3 of Lioness: Special Ops, but before you settle in to binge-watch the latest installment of Taylor Sheridan’s military drama, you might want to know when the episodes are airing. But first, what is ‘Lioness’ about?
Lioness: Special Ops first aired in 2023. It was co-created by Sheridan and Jill Wagner and was based on Team Lioness, a real U.S. military program from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
“[My husband and I] came up with the idea in my backyard in Tennessee,” Wagner told Woman’s World earlier this month. “He was the first person that told me about lionesses. I didn’t know they existed. Taylor has created this version of them that you see, but these women exist, and there are b-d-ss women that go on these ops, and they do these jobs and we’re telling their story. They do exist, whether they’re called lionesses or not.”
As for the plot, it mainly revolves around CIA operative Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña) and her elite team of agents as they embark on life-threatening missions.
“I do believe that Joe [McNamara] could’ve been a man. We’ve seen various stories of men like Joe,” Saldaña said at a screening of Season 3 earlier this month, according to People magazine. “And Kaitlyn [played by Nicole Kidman] could’ve been a man, the same way Westfield [played by Michael Kelly] could’ve been a woman, Kyle [played by Thad Luckinbill] could’ve been a woman. These are incredibly complex individuals [and] any actor who challenges themselves can rise to that occasion.”
“When you write something so incredible that it kind of defies gender and race, and it’s just about the merit of that human being, I feel like you give yourself the opportunity of a wider range of actors that can come in and sort of vie for that part,” she continued. “I have a great deal of respect for men that really know how to write women and I think that Taylor gives himself enough credit. I’m happy to say that, after playing one of his female characters for three seasons, I’m incredibly honored that he wrote Joe as a woman.”
‘Lioness’ Season 3 airing schedule
Season 3 of Lioness will feature the same danger, drama and suspense, but according to Laysla De Oliveira there will be an entirely new mission.
“Every season is completely different. You think you know what you’re gonna see. You don’t. It’s completely different,” she told Woman’s World. “The mission’s really personal this year, and the stakes are really high because of that.”
