The journey of Mike McLusky and his reign over Kingstown for the past few years has pulled viewers in season after season, but all good things must come to an end. After a successful fourth season, Mayor of Kingstown has been renewed for a fifth—but fans were sad to learn that it will be the last one. The hit Taylor Sheridan series first aired back in 2021, and Jeremy Renner has been expertly leading the show since the beginning.
Mayor of Kingstown takes place in a city where the economy largely revolves around the local prison, while Renner’s character essentially serves as the middleman between the folks on the outside and those behind bars. Knowing that the upcoming fifth season will be the show’s last, allow us to walk you through everything we know about the end, and take a look back on what went down in season 4.
What we know about season 5 of ‘Mayor of Kingstown’
At this point in time, we know that Mayor of Kingstown season 5 will be the last one in the Taylor Sheridan series and that instead of the typical 10 episodes, season 5 will only include eight episodes. The show’s lead, Jeremy Renner, will return, reprising his role of Mike McLusky. Joining him is Edie Falco, who was introduced in the fourth season as Warden Nina Hobbs.
As of 2024, Taylor Sheridan and his Mayor of Kingstown co-creator Hugh Dillion had anticipated as many as seven seasons of the gritty crime drama. “When we first mapped it out, he’s the king at knowing where it ends,” Dillon told Screen Rant. “I like intros, and I like explosive intros. And he has an ending for it in season 7. Whether it goes that far or that’s where we get [who knows], but he has an ending and everyone knows about it, the broad strokes. And when you talk to him, he will tell you in detail. So, our goal is to get to that season 7, because that’s as far as we can get, because that’s where he’s always had it. Fifteen years ago, he had it.”
While we might not know exactly what led to this change in direction, Taylor Sheridan certainly knows how to pivot (just look at Yellowstone!), so we have to imagine the last season will finish with a bang.
‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Season 4
As is the case with most of Taylor Sheridan’s series, season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown was loaded with drama. With a gang war brewing as different groups battled for power in Kingstown, Mike was simultaneously balancing the weight of his brother Kyle serving time in prison, while also going up against a new warden, complicating things for him. In the end, tragedy struck as Kyle’s wife was killed, and despite the brothers getting their revenge, the pain of the season’s events lingers and continues to leave its mark.
When does ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ season 5 come out?
The fourth season of Mayor of Kingstown has just wrapped up, so at this point in time, there is no season 5 release date. While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to Mike McLusky and the world of Kingstown, the promise of a carefully crafted finale from Taylor Sheridan means we’re in for an unforgettable send-off.
