It’s only been a few weeks since the world said goodbye to Outlander after the show’s finale aired on May 15, and we’re already longing for Claire, Jamie and the familiar faces we grew to love over the course of eight seasons. However, despite their departure from screens, Outlander fans still have something to look forward to with the premiere of Blood of My Blood Season 2, the spinoff prequel that tells the tale of Jamie and Claire’s parents. A recently released teaser pulled the curtain back on what’s to come, and here, we break down what went down in Season 1 and what could be in store for Season 2.

‘Blood of My Blood’ Season 1 recap

Blood of My Blood introduced Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia, and Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian. As for Henry and Julia’s story, the duo first cross paths not in person, but through letters, with Henry fighting in WWI and Julia working at London’s censorship office. Over time, their relationship blossoms through their correspondence and the two ultimately unite in person and get married. While Julia is pregnant, she and Henry get into a car accident in Scotland, and when she stumbles upon the stones at Craigh na Dun, she falls into a different time, much like her daughter Claire did in Outlander. Eventually, Henry follows her, but their journeys take them to different places during the same time period.

Soon after traveling through time, Julia is forced to work as a maid for Lord Lovat, Brian’s father, and it’s through her servitude that she gets to know Brian, Jamie’s father. As her pregnancy develops, she’s forced to give into Lord Lovat’s predatory advances, leading him to believe she’s carrying his heir as a means of protecting her own life and that of her unborn child. Meanwhile, Henry becomes an advisor and lawyer for the Grants, tying him to Ellen, Jamie’s mom, as Malcolm Grant is betrothed to her.

The story of Brian and Ellen is a rather romantic one, but it isn’t without conflict. After a chance meeting at a gathering in the wake of her father’s death, Ellen and Brian quickly form a connection, prompting them to seek one another out in secret. Despite their growing feelings, Ellen is promised to Malcolm Grant, used as a pawn in her brothers’ games.

The season was full of heartache, missed connections and trauma for these four characters. Ellen was able to escape her wedding to Malcolm, but when he pursued her and Brian, Brian was forced to end Malcolm’s life in self-defense. For Julia and Henry, the duo reunited and were able to escape with their baby to the standing stones, but unsure if the child could travel through time as well, the season ended with their fate unclear.

‘Blood of My Blood’ Season 2 trailer is full of drama

The Season 2 trailer gave a glimpse at what’s to come—and reveals that only Henry made it through the stones, with Julia stuck in the past. As Henry struggles with being away from his family, Ellen and Brian weather their own storm as they navigate life together against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rising. See what’s in store for these characters when Blood of My Blood Season 2 premieres on September 18.
