When it comes to movies and television, we can’t help but love going back in time to a period far before us. Whether it be the costumes, the drama set against these faraway backdrops or the glimpse into what life was like during a time of which we’ve only read about, there’s something enticing about a historical fiction TV series. If you’re looking to get your next fix within this genre, there’s no shortage of new shows hitting screens over the coming months. Here, a look at a few of the historical fiction TV shows premiering soon.
Chief of War—Apple TV+
Many will remember Jason Momoa’s dramatic stint in Game of Thrones and this time around, he’s telling a different story of days gone by. Chief of War, an all-new series streaming on Apple TV+, details Hawaii’s unification and colonization, led by a cast of primarily Polynesian actors. Momoa stars as Ka’iana, a war chief who aims to unite the islands before they are colonized. See it on August 1.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood—Starz
Fans of Outlander won’t want to miss the exciting prequel series that tells the story of those who came before Claire and Jamie. Blood of My Blood explores the relationships of Claire’s parents and Jamie’s parents and reveals the unexpected way in which their timelines collided. See it on August 8.
King & Conqueror—BBC iPlayer
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and James Norton star opposite one another in this intense historical fiction drama. The Game of Thrones alumnus brings to life the part of William, Duke of Normandy, with Norton playing Harold, Earl of Wessex. Set around the Battle of Hastings, history lovers are sure to enjoy this story. Though at this time no release date has been announced, a recent trailer indicates that it will be revealed soon.
Bloodaxe—Prime Video
Who doesn’t love a Viking story? Bloodaxe, set to hit screens on a to-be-announced date, will tell the story of Erik Bloodaxe and Gunnhil, his wife, as they rise to power and go head-to-head with those who stand in their way. Stay tuned for more info!

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale—Out September 12
Downton Abbey has been pulling fans in for years, and whether it was the series or the films, the stories keep us interested with each passing year. Now, in the third and final film in the franchise, the Crawley family is living through the 1930s and facing scandal in the wake of Mary’s divorce. Go back in time in this epic chapter full of intrigue, scandal and drama. See it in theaters on September 12.
