Will ‘The Abandons’ Return for Season 2? Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson’s Western Ends in Flames
Who emerged from the flames? See the latest on the cast and a major shakeup for 'The Abandons' Season 2
Everyone loves a good western, but it’s rare to see one led by a powerful woman—Luckily, The Abandons delivers. One of Netflix’s latest dramas was expertly led by television superstars Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, and the gripping storyline, compelling characters and cliffhanger ending has us begging for more—but is The Abandons coming back for Season 2? Here, everything we know about the show’s potential follow-up, leadership changes that may impact its return and more.
Where Season 1 of ‘The Abandons’ left us
Taking place in the state of Washington during the 1800s, two women and their families are at odds with one another as they fight for land and protect those they love and care for. At the helm of one family is Fiona Nolan, portrayed by Lena Headey, known by most for her role as Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones. Though not necessarily wealthy, she is driven by her found family of orphans and outcasts, whom she lives with on her cattle ranch. Opposite her is Gillian Anderson, known for her X-Files fame, who brings to life the fierce character of Constance Van Ness. The tough widow inherited her fortune from her late husband, and with her power and influence within their community, she is willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants—one of the biggest things being Fiona’s land.
One of the most pivotal moments of the first season occurs in the first episode, when one of Constance’s sons, Willem, assaults Dahlia, one of Fiona’s daughters. In retaliation, Fiona kills Willem, hiding his body to avoid the inevitable chaos that would ensue. When the truth of Willem’s death is revealed, Constance retaliates by kidnapping Dahlia, and when Fiona and Constance finally come face-to-face, it ends in fiery violence. The Van Ness mansion goes up in flames, and Fiona and Constance continue to battle within the burning house. In the end, only one woman emerges from the burning structure—and fans are anxious to know who it is that survives!

What we know about ‘The Abandons’ Season 2
At this time, The Abandons has not yet been renewed for a second season; however, there are a few factors that might contribute to what’s next for the Netflix western. For starters, shortly before production concluded on the first season, the show’s creator, showrunner and executive producer, Kurt Sutter, departed the series. Sutter is known both for his work on screen as an actor, as well as for his work behind-the-scenes, one of his most notable projects being Sons of Anarchy, which he co-created and wrote. According to Deadline, his split from the series came as a result of “creative differences over the direction of the big-scale production as it is wrapping filming and headed into post.”
While we’re still waiting for official word on Season 2, the show’s passionate fanbase and that unforgettable cliffhanger give us plenty of reason to stay hopeful. In the meantime, you can stream all eight episodes of Season 1 on Netflix—perfect for a weekend binge or introducing friends to this fierce, female-led western. Here’s hoping we’ll soon find out who emerged from those flames!
