If you’ve ever wondered where the scenic landscapes of Timberlake and Sullivan’s Crossing are located, you’ll be pleased to know it’s not too far away. The series is filmed in the beautiful town of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Morgan Kohan, who portrays Maggie Sullivan on the series, explained her love for the city that has the best of both worlds.

The nice thing about it too is it’s a city and then [a little bit] out, you can be out on a trail somewhere in a small community,” Kohan shared. “There’s just so many different bits and pieces you can pick from.”

Specifically, scenes were shot in Beaver Bank, Shubie Park, which is in Dartmouth, as well as in Oakfield and the Eastern Passage. For those scenes that were shot from above, like the transitional scenes of the stunning lakes and land, the footage is of Lawrencetown Beach Provincial Park and the village of Peggy’s Cove.

Lawrencetown Beach is an impressive shore, specifically for surfers as it is a prime location for that sport. Peggy’s Cove is a stunning village that features one of Nova Scotia’s most popular lighthouses and is a beloved fishing town.

The short answer: yes, you can visit the real towns! The beauty of the show being filmed in real towns as opposed to sets is that fans can actually plan a visit to these places. Halifax is a lovely place to see and is definitely worth checking out for a day or weekend trip.

And when the cast isn’t busy filming and running their lines, they, too, are exploring the beauty of Nova Scotia. Chad Michael Murray, who stars on the series as Cal Jones, spoke about how beautiful the area is and why everyone should visit.

“It is the best-kept secret in Canada. This place is absolutely magic,” Murray shared. “We’re out there every day and it’s just such a breath of fresh air filming. You’re among nature and you can’t help but feel so grounded. It’s pretty spectacular. It’s a place that people need to go.”

Is the TV setting the same as the book?

If you didn’t know, Sullivan’s Crossing is based on the books by Robyn Carr of the same name. And while the description of the town is just as beautiful in her writing, the location was completely different.

The Sullivan’s Crossing book series took place in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, as opposed to Nova Scotia, Canada. The showrunner, Roma Roth, has spoken about her decision to set the series in the latter.

To ensure the show would feel distinctive from her other adaptation [Virgin River], I decided to set it in Nova Scotia for Nova Scotia,” Roth explained. “This meant diverging from the books slightly; however, having been born and raised in Canada it’s always been a personal goal of mine to create and write a Canadian content show that would reach a global audience.”
