Romantic relationships can be tricky to navigate. If a couple makes it down the aisle and says “I do,” that’s still just the beginning of their journey through life together. Though there’s no magic trick to a happy marriage, we can all take a few hints from those who've managed to make their unions last.
D.W. and Willie from North Carolina have been married for 82 years, and recently their local news station asked them about their enduring love. When it comes to making it work, the couple shared some surprisingly simple advice: just be nice to each other. That’s a pretty easy tip to follow! And you have to admit, anyone who is married for so long has to know what they’re doing.
That’s not to say they’ve never had any bumps in the road over the years, but they always try to focus on communication rather than laying any blame. “If we have a misunderstanding, we just talk it over.”
At a celebration with their family, their granddaughter, B.J. Williams-Greene, couldn’t help but gush about their relationship: “My grandparents’ marriage is an inspiration," she says. "They communicate and make decisions together, they strive and achieve together and everyone loves them because they are genuine.”
According to Good Morning America, D.W. and Willie met in 1935 and tied the knot in 1937. Now at 103 and 100, their hobbies include watching classic TV shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza and working on crossword puzzles together. When asked what they would do if they were given another century to live together, Willie hilariously answered, “Sit around the house.” Hey, they've definitely earned some time time to relax.
Plus, along with communication, kindness, and friendship, a sense of humor clearly helps maintain a happy relationship, too!
