The 46-year-old Canadian actor, who is beloved by many for his countless roles on the Hallmark Channel over the years, was first introduced toward the end of Shifting Gears Season 2 as the son of Tim Allen’s character. His introduction came after being brought up in conversation countless times over the course of the show’s two seasons, and when we finally got to meet Sam, his storyline left fans wanting more. Though Shifting Gears Season 3 has yet to be confirmed, the show’s renewal seems likely, and with a third season on the horizon, we find ourselves asking if Luke Macfarlane will be coming back. Luke Macfarlane in ‘Shifting Gears’ Season 2
When Sam arrives on the scene, Matt (Tim Allen) is thrilled that his son, an accomplished military man, is back. Despite his success in the Navy, Matt is shocked when his “golden child” reveals that he’s making a career shift and pursuing acting. The by-the-book, traditional Matt is naturally shocked at this revelation, and Riley (Sam’s sister, played by Kat Dennings) finds a little bit of joy in the chaos, as for once, she’s not the one disappointing her dad. Eventually, Matt comes around to his son’s newest endeavor, and with this new chapter opening up for Sam and fans already loving the actor bringing him to life, many are left wondering if we’ll see him in the show’s potential Season 3.
Is Luke Macfarlane coming back for ‘Shifting Gears’ Season 3?
Though Sam’s stint on Shifting Gears has been brief, Luke Macfarlane’s performance in the series has already left fans wanting more—and Shifting Gears showrunner Michelle Nader opened up in a conversation with TV Line about whether or not we can expect to see Sam return in a possible third season! “Luke is so funny, and he fit into that family immediately. I believed them right away. Tim loved working with him, and we all loved the idea of that character. I definitely think we’ll see more of Uncle Sam—and his acting journey—in Season 3.”
And it’s safe to say Macfarlane himself enjoyed the experience as well! The actor opened up to TV Goodness about his Shifting Gears role, and working alongside Tim Allen was something of a dream experience for him. “I loved it. It was so much fun [with] a live audience. I’m a sucker. I just love to ham it up. It’s one episode and I want to come back,” he shared. “It was really fun to work with Tim. He had a lot of ideas about who this character was and we had to find it. It’s really nice to be in a place in my career where I’m [working with someone I grew up watching]. I was so confident in what I had to offer that it made me think about myself as a younger actor and how hard it is when you first start off because you’re so afraid to say things. He was a really good collaborator.”
