Though his time on the series was brief, Matthew’s character left a lasting impression on viewers and the Ingalls family alike. Here’s a closer look at the character of Matthew Rogers, the role he played in Walnut Grove and the actor who brought him to life.

Who was Matthew Rogers?

In Season 9 episode 6 of Little House on the Prairie, a young deaf boy named Matthew Rogers was introduced to audiences. Matthew didn’t speak at first, initially due to his trauma, but he later learned to communicate through sign language.

When he was first brought onto the series, Matthew was being held captive by the traveling snake oil salesman, Dr. Joshua McQueen, who was abusing and exploiting Matthew in a traveling circus.

Matthew first appeared in the episodes “The Wild Boy” Parts 1 and 2. He was kept in a cage and forced to perform for audiences while being poked and prodded with sticks. Dr. McQueen billed Matthew as “Wild Boy of the North” and used morphine-laced elixir to keep him aggressive for the circus. Eventually, Matthew was able to escape the abusive circus act, but he was soon found hiding in the barn of Jenny Wilder. The episodes explored themes of compassion, communication and acceptance.

Once he met the folks of Walnut Grove, Laura Ingalls Wilder began to teach Matthew sign language so that he could communicate with others. Soon enough, Matthew was taken in by Mr. Edwards after he realized he was abused and suffering from drug withdrawal.

But their time together wasn’t long, as Matthew’s biological father returned and explained that he didn’t abandon his son, rather that he was too poor to keep him. His father eventually convinced his son to leave with him and Matthew left Walnut Grove behind.

Who played Matthew Rogers?

The actor who starred from 1982 to 1983 as Matthew Rogers in five episodes of Little House on the Prairie is Jonathan Hall Kovacs. Like his character, Kovacs was a deaf actor who knew how to use sign language, so it was a natural fit when his character was learning it. The role on Little House was one of the firsts for the then 13-year-old, following only a TV movie in 1982 called The Six of Us.

Later on, Kovacs booked a minor role on the TV series, The Family Tree (1983), appearing in six episodes. He also booked an episode of General Hospital (1983), Airwolf (1985) and Gideon’s Crossing (2001). His days as a child actor are behind him, however, with the role on Gideon’s Crossing being his last. Today, the 56-year-old is still an entertainer, frequently posting videos on social media.

How I became a ‘Yellowstone’ superfan 

I was born and raised in Colorado, but most of my extended family lives in Montana and Wyoming. Because of that, I spent a lot of time on real ranches, interacting with real cowboys. Initially, I was very skeptical about watching the Yellowstone universe. After all, I know what it takes to eat, sleep and breathe cattle ranching. 

Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me and I binge-watched Yellowstone, then its two prequels—1883 and 1923—and became obsessed. I loved the entire Dutton family and was pleasantly surprised to see how accurately they portrayed cattle ranching, horseback riding and more. The only thing they miss the mark on is the day-to-day life. Thankfully, none of the cowboys I know kill and blackmail people like the Duttons do. 

That didn’t keep me from becoming obsessed with the series, and when it ended in 2024 I was devastated. Sure, I still had 1923 Season 2 to look forward to, but that show didn’t have my favorite character, Beth Dutton. Enter Dutton Ranch. 

Ever since the show was announced I’ve been aggressively scouring the internet and social media for updates. And then I got one: It would be premiering on Friday, May 15, and I was invited to the press junket and world premiere. I was also given access to the first four episodes, which I binge-watched right away.

My ‘Dutton Ranch’ review

Since Dutton Ranch centers around Beth and Rip, I had a feeling I was going to love it. And I was correct. Beth and Rip’s chemistry, spice, sizzle and entrancing dynamic take center stage in the new series. It’s so magnetic you almost don’t want to leave their scenes.

Almost. Then Annette Bening shows up. Her character Beulah Jackson captivated me and reminded me of a good old-fashioned wild West villain. She has style, money, a complex family dynamic and, of course, cattle. Honestly, if Sheridan needs another Yellowstone prequel, I recommend one centered around the Jackson family. I won’t spoil anything, but I’ll say I need more information, background, drama and more. 

Ed Harris also stole my heart, but in a different way. His character, Everett McKinney, allows viewers to see a softer side of Beth that makes her even more lovable. And his wit, compassion and caring energy make you melt.

What could make ‘Dutton Ranch’ better 

Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing about Dutton Ranch. The only thing I would suggest is a crossover with Marshals, another Yellowstone spinoff, or Landman, Sheridan’s other modern-day Texas drama. 

In fact, why doesn’t Paramount just combine them all into one big “Sheridan Saga” episode? Now, that would be a wild Western trip.

How to watch ‘I Gotta Ask’ with Annie F. Downs

Now comes Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a project that may be the strangest and potentially boldest evolution of the franchise yet. Instead of focusing on Sheldon Cooper or another central member of the original ensemble, the spotlight shifts to Stuart Bloom, the perpetually anxious comic book store owner played by Kevin Sussman.

In the show, Stuart accidentally breaks a device created by Sheldon and Leonard that unleashes a multiverse-style chain reaction. The result is a much more science-fiction-driven premise than fans are used to from the franchise, with alternate realities, returning characters and what appears to be a more cinematic single-camera style. According to Jessica Radloff, the show “incorporates the original Big Bang world with something that’s very different, but also very in line with Stuart and the comic book store and the whole universe.”

Kevin Sussman leads the series as Stuart alongside several familiar faces from the original show, including John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke, Lauren Lapkus as Denise and Brian Posehn as Bert Kibbler. 

Thoughts on ‘Stuart’

According to Big Bang Theory producers Steve Holland and Steve Molaro (neither of whom are involved in the new show), as well as The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series author Jessica Radloff, that unlikely choice is exactly why the show looks like it could work.

STEVE HOLLAND: “This is a thing that Chuck Lorre had wanted to do since Big Bang ended. He had this thought of Stuart and Bert as this weird comedy duo in this sort of big action-adventure show. It’s exciting that it’s so different. And I think all of these shows in a smart way have been very different from one another and very different from Big Bang. This is totally unlike anything you’ve seen in this world before and I’m excited. I’ve seen a little bit of it just from visiting the set and saying hey to the actors. I’m excited to see what it becomes all put together. I know Chuck, just hearing him talk about it when he’s in our room [on Georgie and Mandie], is giddy about it, so it’s fun.”

That “totally unlike anything” description is telling, because Stuart Fails to Save the Universe appears to be leaning far more heavily into science-fiction storytelling than any previous installment of the franchise. That may sound risky for a comedy universe built largely around apartment conversations, relationship drama and comic book jokes, but Radloff believes that willingness to reinvent the formula is exactly why the franchise has survived.

JESSICA RADLOFF: “I think it’s so smart what they’re doing with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe the same way it was so smart when they made Young Sheldon single-cam instead of multi-cam, because it differentiates the universe and it helps a show stand on its own. Otherwise, you have people comparing and thinking they’re going to get the same thing—and it can’t be the same.”

Ironically, Stuart Bloom was never supposed to become one of the main characters of The Big Bang Theory in the first place. When viewers first met him in Season 2, Stuart was relatively confident, socially functional and even managed to date Penny. But over time, the character evolved into something else entirely: a lovable outsider struggling with insecurity, loneliness and self-worth issues that many viewers quietly identified with. 

JESSICA RADLOFF: “I think so many of us can relate to his character. And even Kevin said to me in the book that he gets so many fans that come up to him that are, like, ‘I’m such a Stuart.’ He’s got such a passion for comic books and he’s comfortable behind that desk. That’s his element, being in that comic book store. That’s where he excels. And it’s the personal stuff that’s hard. Most people are like that, where they know exactly what to do at work, but the personal stuff is really hard. And that’s why people really took to the character of Stuart, who was doubting himself at every turn and wasn’t sure.”

STEVE MOLARO: “While I’m not involved in that show, I love that Stuart is getting more time to shine. We always loved writing for the character and Kevin Sussman, who plays him, is incredibly talented and hilarious. I always loved that Stuart was not a brilliant scientist like the other characters, but that was not a factor in their friendships. Considering he ran the comic book store where sci-fi and fantasy stories were front and center, it only makes sense that a show featuring him would have that same flavor.”

The audience’s eyes and ears

That emotional accessibility may be exactly why Stuart has endured. Sheldon Cooper may have become the franchise’s breakout icon, but Stuart often felt more like the audience: someone fascinated by fantasy worlds while struggling to navigate ordinary life. Even the trajectory of Kevin Sussman himself feels strangely mirrored in Stuart’s story arc.

JESSICA RADLOFF: “I couldn’t be more excited for Kevin Sussman, who plays Stuart. He’s one of the most incredible guys. As he talked about when we did our interviews for the book and on the podcast, he went through so much in those early days of Big Bang because he originally auditioned for Howard. I think he might’ve auditioned for Leonard too, but Howard was the main one—and he got the role and then he was told he didn’t have the role because he couldn’t get out of his contract with ABC and Ugly Betty. And it would’ve been a very different show if you had a different Howard, but he handled it in the classiest way possible. He was the ultimate team player and he was always so gracious. So I’m so happy that he’s got his own show now.”

STEVE HOLLAND: “I was asking Kevin what it feels like, because I’m sure he was never thinking at the end of Big Bang, ‘Oh, well, in a few years Stuart’s going to be leading his own show.’ I’m sure that was not a thought that crossed his mind, although I think Chuck, over the years, had mentioned this to him as a thing he wanted to do. But it’s really interesting to see him sort of step up into a leading role, and exciting for him to get the chance. Especially since he was originally going to be playing Wolowitz, and that didn’t happen because he was on another show that he was obligated to go back to. So he lost that, but then got to come back and be a big part of the Big Bang world. It’s nice for him to get this second chance at being the main character.”

What may surprise longtime viewers most is just how ambitious the new show’s premise appears to be. As noted, it incorporates elements of science fiction, alternate realities and inventions connected directly to Sheldon and Leonard.

JESSICA RADLOFF: “The premise is really clever. When I read the logline for the first time, I was, like, ‘This is really interesting,’ because they’re finding a way to incorporate Sheldon and Leonard by having Stuart mess up a piece of equipment—their invention—and now he has to find his way out of it. So it incorporates the original Big Bang world with something that’s very different, but also very in line with Stuart and the comic book store and the whole universe. I’m really excited to see how they’re going to evolve these stories and what it’s going to look like and the people that they’re going to bring back because they did say they’re going to have beloved characters and cast members return.”

At its core, though, the success of the expanding Big Bang Theory universe may come down to something much simpler: viewers genuinely love spending time with these characters.

JESSICA RADLOFF: “Fans have been asking forever for a spinoff, but you’re taking these characters that were so beloved and people were not tired of watching. They wanted to see what’s going on in their lives. And to have that story continue, that’s the thread that makes people come back for more. And that’s a credit to Steve Molaro, Steve Holland, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady—they made these characters so interesting that you want to follow them through all these different iterations.”

‘Ransom Canyon’ Season 2 new cast members

Steve Howey will join Ransom Canyon Season 2 as Staten’s half-brother Levi, while Patricia Clarkson will bring Claire, Quinn’s mother, to life. Heidi Engerman joins the cast as Yancy’s wife and Ben Robson joins as a recurring cast member. 

What about Davis and Reid?

In Season 2, Eoin Macken and Andrew Liner, who played Davis and Reid Collins, are no longer considered regulars in the show. 

Now, that same story is being told in a new light and there are some major details that change. The new Little House follows the original books by Laura Ingalls Wilder much more closely, so instead of extra warmth and heart, there is a bit more grit and realism. The Netflix series is taking the time to emphasize Laura Ingalls’ real experience, rather than show it in an idealized way.

While you wait for the new series to be available, photos from the Netflix series have dropped and although there are some differences, there are lots of similarities between the two shows. In the first episode of both Little House on the Prairie series, the Ingalls family packs up their wagon and heads west in search of a new home and a new life. The photo above features Alice Halsey as Laura and Skywalker Hughes as Mary, as they prepare to leave behind their home for a new life.

In the photo below, you can see a very similar picture of Melissa Gilbert as Laura and Melissa Sue Anderson as Mary, also looking out the back of their family wagon. While the photo quality and actress are different, the meaning behind them are very much the same.

The newer photo, however, showcases that moving to a new place wasn’t easy and their journey was a long and difficult one.

Charles “Pa” Ingalls

Many fans of the original series thought it would be impossible to find an actor to portray Charles “Pa” Ingalls quite like the legendary Michael Landon. But it seems that Luke Bracey has done just that, taking on the role while bringing the spirit of Charles to life.

Both photos show the character of Pa looking off into the distance wearing the usual suspenders, a soft brimmed hat and simple clothing. The above picture features Bracey in his new role while the photo below shows the legendary Michael Landon.

Ma and Pa

In both the original and new Little House on the Prairie shows, it’s clear that Charles and Caroline Ingalls loved each other. The couple were a picture of strength and love in each of their scenes, and that is certainly being recreated in the new series.

In the above photo, Pa (Bracey) is holding and Ma (Crosby Fitzgerald), as they cross the threshold into their new home. The photo below shows Pa and Ma, portrayed by Landon and Karen Grassle, as they travel somewhere on their wagon. Both photos show that same look of love and strength.

The Ingalls family

No Little House on the Prairie, whether from 1974 or 2026, would be complete without Pa and his fiddle while the family dances around him. In the photo above,  you can see Luke Bracey as he fiddles like Charles Ingalls, while his girls enjoy the music. Below, Michael Landon is holding the instrument as his family dances and claps to the tune.

In real life, Pa Ingalls really was an accomplished fiddler, often playing his tunes for the family. He usually would pull out the instrument when his girls needed some comfort or entertainment, which is exactly what is happening in both photos.

Mika Abdalla (Allie Hayes)

Mika Abdalla might portray Allie Hayes, a girl in love with Dean DiLaurentis, on the series but the actress has her own love story in real life! Abdalla has been in a relationship with actor Jake Short since at least 2022. 

The couple first met while co-starring in the 2022 film Sex Appeal, which sparked their relationship. In fact, they’re allegedly engaged now, according to an Instagram post from Short’s manager, Brian Medavoy. ‘Fourth Wing’ TV series is officially greenlit at Prime Video

The forthcoming TV series, based on Yarros’ blockbuster Empyrean novels, will follow Violet Sorrengail as she enters the brutal Basgiath War College to train as a dragon rider. On Monday, May 11, , Jordan announced onstage at the Amazon Upfront presentation that the Fourth Wing adaptation is moving forward with a series order TK a Prime Video. When Amazon MGM Studios first optioned the rights to the first novel in Yarros’ Empyrean series, fans were thrilled to discover Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society, was producing the TV series. 

Over the past few months, the Oscar winner has been dropping hints about the adaptation in interviews—and every single conversation proves just how deeply he cares about getting this right for fans. He reiterated his commitment to honoring the fandom last night at the Amazon presentation.

“This project required the right creative partner,” Jordan said before bringing out Joy, who added that the team was hard at work “building a cinematic world” with the goal “to deliver the series this fandom deserves.” Thank the gods.

Rebecca Yarros weighs in on the adaptation: ‘I trust them completely’ 

Taking a beloved story from page to screen is a delicate—and often difficult—process. And with a fandom as massive as Fourth Wing’s, Yarros fully knows how much this adaptation means to readers. “These are the people who understand what a story means to its readers, and they’re passionate about the book, which is why I trust them completely,” she said to the audience last night. 

Skyrocketing beyond BookTook, Yarros’ Empyrean series has sold more than 12 million copies and the third installment, Onyx Storm, was the fastest-selling adult novel of the last two decades. So it’s no surprise fans are waiting on every single update with bated breath—and the behind-the-scenes switcheroos have been a lot to keep up with. 

Earlier this year, Averill—who previously served as executive producer on Wednesday, Jane The Virgin and The Good Wife—was announced as the series’ new showrunner. But initially, Moira Walley-Beckett was tapped as the showrunner and executive producer back in July 2024. Before this departure, Yarros had read and loved a few versions of Walley-Beckett’s scripts—including a potential pilot. 

“Having read a couple versions of the pilot, I have nothing but respect for her, and watching how she handles the book with such respect and such zeal. It really is phenomenal,” she said to Variety at the time. “Really, just no notes.”

Jordan and Prime are teaming up on multiple projects

Fourth Wing was one of three series Jordan talked about at the Amazon presentation last night along with The Greatest and Delphi—which are all being developed under Outlier Society’s TV deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

“We’re excited about what we’re building,” Jordan concluded. “We’ll see you soon on the screen.”

New additions join the ‘Ted Lasso’ cast

In addition to the returning cast members we’ve grown to love, several new additions are joining the Ted Lasso Season 4 cast. Jude Mack, Tanya Reynolds, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Abbie Hern and Aisling Sharkey are set to appear in the series, as well as Grant Feely, who was cast as Ted’s son.

Ted Lasso will officially return for Season 4 on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. The new season is exclusive to Apple TV, where it will debut with one episode, followed by weekly releases every Wednesday until the 10-episode finale on October 7, 2026.
